Working out the diamond combination for Megan and Harry’s Engagement Ring
Following the news of Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle this week, like so many other jewellers, we have been asked repeatedly about the arrangement of diamonds within the engagement ring.
Most people know that the central diamond was sourced from Botswana, and the outer diamonds were from existing jewellery from Harry’s mother Diana’s collection. But despite speculation, little is known about the arrangement of diamonds in the ring.
This is our opinion of the diamonds used, from media photographs out this week.
Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring Diamonds
Central diamond: Cushion cut approx. 3 carats in size. Set into Platinum, with double claws to hold the diamond at each corner. The cushion cut diamond is likely to soar in popularity. The most popular diamond shape to date is the round-brilliant cut diamond, closely followed by the square Princess cut diamond. Cushion cuts are a combination. Usually rectangular, cushions have softer corners, polished round with a pillow like shape to the stone. Two pointed claws help to define the polished corners of the design. Platinum is usually chosen for setting due to its natural whiteness and suitability for setting diamonds into it. Prince Harry’s diamond is believed to be sourced from Botswana, one of the major diamond producing regions of the World.

Outer diamonds: Round brilliant cut diamonds. Round brilliant cut diamonds match the faceting style of the Cushion. Meghan’s engagement ring style is the classic Trilogy style of ring. We also refer to the ring as a graduated 3 stone engagement ring. The smaller outer diamonds enhance the size of the larger diamond.
The band of the ring: The band of Meghan Markle’s ring is made from 18ct Yellow gold from what we can see. It would be a nice touch if Harry had chosen Fairtrade Yellow Gold, our personal choice due to its ethical standards in benefitting communities of artisanal miners.
