{"id":10205,"date":"2016-02-27T17:46:51","date_gmt":"2016-02-27T17:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.serendipitydiamonds.com\/blog\/?p=10205"},"modified":"2019-03-30T13:01:42","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T13:01:42","slug":"leap-year-proposals-what-does-it-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.serendipitydiamonds.com\/blog\/leap-year-proposals-what-does-it-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"The Leap Year Proposal &#8211; What Does it Mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s blog is intended for\u00a0those of you who are uncertain about the tradition of a leap year proposal.<\/p>\n<p>This year it&#8217;s a\u00a0leap year\u2014introduced to balance out the Gregorian Calendar with the Solar Year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"thirdPar\">\n<p><em>&#8220;A leap year, where an extra day is added to the end of February every four years, is down to the solar system&#8217;s disparity with the Gregorian calendar.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fourthPar\">\n<p><em>A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days. So leap seconds &#8211; and leap years &#8211; are added as means of keeping our clocks (and calendars) in sync with the Earth and its seasons.&#8221;<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/12173502\/Leap-Year-2016-Why-does-February-have-29-days-every-four-years.html\">read the full article<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>The tradition\u00a0goes way back to Ireland and the Fifth Century when\u00a0St Bridget complained to St Patrick that women had to wait too long for suitors to propose.\u00a0He gave women a single day in a leap year to pop the question\u2014the last day of the shortest month.\u00a0The story goes that\u00a0Bridget went down on one\u00a0knee and proposed to Patrick but he declined, kissing her cheek and handing across\u00a0a silk gown to ease the disappointment. The first historic\u00a0record\u00a0of a woman\u00a0proposing on February 29th comes from\u00a013th Century Scotland, where a law was passed stating that a man\u00a0refusing a proposal on the leap year must pay a fine, which could range from a kiss, right through to a silk dress or, most commonly, a pair of gloves.<\/p>\n<p>The leap year proposal is not for most women. Many will dismiss the idea as a ridiculous\u00a0tradition, but for others it will be seized opportunity to do things differently.
