{"id":9903,"date":"2015-10-08T10:37:31","date_gmt":"2015-10-08T10:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.serendipitydiamonds.com\/blog\/?p=9903"},"modified":"2019-04-02T10:47:43","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T10:47:43","slug":"serendipity-diamonds-becomes-fairmined-gold-licensee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.serendipitydiamonds.com\/blog\/serendipity-diamonds-becomes-fairmined-gold-licensee\/","title":{"rendered":"Serendipity Diamonds Becomes Fairmined Gold Licensee"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Fairmined Gold at Serendipity Diamonds<\/h2>\n<p>This week we are very proud to introduce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairmined.org\/\">Fairmined<\/a> Gold to our bespoke jewellery service and for use in future collections at Serendipity Diamonds.\u00a0We were delighted earlier this week to receive our Fairmined license \u2013 a further step towards expanding our services for responsibly sourced jewellery made from traceable gold.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Fairmined Gold?<\/h2>\n<p>Fairmined is gold mined by empowered responsible artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) who have committed to work to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.serendipitydiamonds.com\/uk\/education\/fairmined-gold\">Fairmined Standard\u00a0<\/a>\u2013 improving working conditions, protecting the environment, addressing gender equality, abolishing child labour and\u00a0ensuring there is no link to conflict situations. Traditionally artisanal mining is largely a poverty-driven activity where miners face precarious working conditions. It certifies gold that has been mined under strict standards \u2013 fully traceable and audited by a strict 3rd party system giving the consumer rock solid reassurance and added meaning.<\/p>\n<h2>Fairmined and Fairtrade Gold<\/h2>\n<p>There might be some\u00a0confusion about the existence of\u00a0Fairtrade Gold and Fairmined Gold. To clarify \u2013 both\u00a0types of ethical gold are fully traceable and belong to systems responsible\u00a0for improving the lives of small-scale miners and their communities.\u00a0As with\u00a0Fairtrade, The Fairmined Standard and Certification system has gained industry recognition and credibility as being a leading standard for artisanal gold mining, backed by international organisations, industry associations, major luxury brands (like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chopard.com\/jewellery\">Chopard<\/a> for example) and national government organisations and ministries from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Both Fairtrade and Fairmined deserve equal recognition.\u00a0A<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0recent article in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/liz-earle\/jewellery-liz-earle_b_8231740.html\">Huffington Post<\/a> incorrectly noted\u00a0Fairtrade Gold as the only fully accredited, independently audited and totally transparent source of gold. The article also noted\u00a0the auditor as\u00a0ISEAL Alliance, where it should be FLO Cert for Fairtrade Gold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Fairmined means for the Consumer?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Whether it is Fairmined Gold or Fairtrade Gold, any precious item of jewellery is\u00a0given far greater meaning when it has been responsibly mined within a system that improves the lives of poor communities of miners around the World. With the backing of larger players in the jewellery industry, more mines will ultimately mean a greater supply of ethically sourced gold. Only this week we learned of <a href=\"http:\/\/hosted-p0.vresp.com\/1862887\/039648af41\/ARCHIVE\">6 new mines<\/a>\u00a0reaching certification under the Fairmined Standard. Great news for our industry.
