Black Rhodium Jewellery: Unleashing the Power of Contrast

Black Rhodium Ring with White Diamonds and Black Diamonds

Black Rhodium provides a captivating black finish for precious metals, popular for jewellery design. Its raven-black hue adds sophistication and allure to any piece of jewellery, and provides contrast, especially when paired with white diamonds.

The composition, benefits, applications, and maintenance of Black Rhodium all differ compared to regular Rhodium plating, typically applied to white gold.

What is Black Rhodium

This dark metal finish adds fine plating over the surface of an item of jewellery. Through the process of electroplating, an electric current passes through a solution of Rhodium to evenly apply the plating.

The addition of black plating—provides contrast in a unique and effective way. Dark backgrounds allow white diamonds or gemstones to shine brightly. The most effective use pairs sections of black diamonds with black plated claws, alongside white diamonds held within White Rhodium claws. (See the main image).

Aesthetics of Rhodium plating

In addition to its contrasting properties, the finish offers a unique aesthetic appeal. Its sleek appearance imparts an edgy and contemporary look to jewellery. This makes it particularly popular in modern and avant-garde designs. Moreover, Black Rhodium makes a suitable finish for various jewellery items, including rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and pendants.

We find several applications across different realms of jewellery design. For instance, when added to engagement rings to create unconventional and eye-catching designs. In the realm of fashion jewellery, Black Rhodium-plated pieces gained popularity among those seeking a modern and contemporary style. From statement earrings to sleek necklaces, Black Rhodium enhances the overall appeal of fashion-forward accessories.

The application of Rhodium

The Rhodium plating process involves several steps. Firstly, jewellery pieces undergo thorough cleaning and polishing to ensure a smooth surface. Next, items go into the plating solution containing Black Rhodium solution and are connected to an electric current. Through electroplating, a thin layer of Rhodium coats the surface of the jewellery.

Shiny and matte black finishes

In the same way as regular Rhodium, jewellers achieve variations of shiny or matte by polishing or texturing the metal before adding the Rhodium. In fact, few people realised that plating has no bearing on the shine of jewellery.

The addition of black rhodium to engraved jewellery

Some jewellers define engraved jewellery with the addition of Black Rhodium.

How long does Black Rhodium solution last? Shelf life.

Black Rhodium has a limited shelf life, rarely noted by suppliers. Occasional use and the high cost of this material means many workshops do not offer the option for jewellery. By comparison, the widespread popularity and use of White Rhodium makes it readily available by comparison.

How much does Black Rhodium cost?

Suppliers, including Heimerle and Meule provide the solution via Cookson Precious Metals, at a cost of over £500 per litre, at the time of this post. As a result, the cost makes it ineffective for occasional jewellery commissions unless used frequently.

Caring for your jewellery

Proper remains important to maintain the beauty and longevity of Rhodium-plated jewellery. Moreover, we recommend regular gentle cleaning using a soft cloth or a non-abrasive jewellery cleaning solution to maintain shine. Within our jewellery showroom, we offer a selection of Connoisseur cleaning products, such as the Dazzlestik, suitable for both precious metals and diamonds.

Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive materials that may damage the plating. Additionally, we recommend removing Rhodium jewellery before engaging in activities that may expose it to chemicals, abrasive surfaces, or extreme temperatures.

The introduction of Black Rhodium made a significant impact on jewellery design. Its captivating dark hue and unique aesthetic appeal add sophistication and elegance to various pieces.

Whether incorporated into engagement rings, fashion jewellery, or accessories, Black Rhodium continues to captivate jewellery enthusiasts with its striking contrast and contemporary appeal.
