History

The name Sapphire comes from “Sapphirus”, meaning dear to the planet Saturn. The word Sapphirus in Latin references pink as a colour dating back to the 17 Century.

As a result, pink sapphires are now most popular for engagement rings.

Traditionally, this gem symbolizes nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Moreover, it has decorated the robes of royalty and clergy members for centuries.

In addition, it is often associated with royalty and romance. The association was reinforced in 1981 when Prince Charles gave a blue sapphire engagement ring to Lady Diana. Read more about Lady Dianas engagement ring.

Dating back centuries, the sapphire has been worn and represented among royalty and clergy. Said to symbolise nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness.

Ancient Greece strongly believed that blue sapphire protected them from harm and envy.

Interestingly in the middle ages, the clergy wore blue sapphires to symbolise heaven. Whereas ordinary folks thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings.

Moving forward, the symbolism changed. Believed to have the power to guard chastity, make peace between enemies, influence spirits, and reveal the secrets of oracles.

Healing Properties

Additionally, sapphire is believed to bring healing properties to the wearer. These include helping with migraines, headaches, eyesight, and inner ear issues, along with balance and fevers.

According to beliefs, the gemstone helps emotions such as relieving anxiety and stress.

Madagascar Sapphire

Madagascar sapphires are considered one of the top types of sapphires mined. In 1998, a huge sapphire gemstone deposit was discovered, sparking a huge interest in the mine.

This was extremely rare to hear of a deposit this size being discovered. Generally, sapphires from this mine are dark blue in shade.
