CAD vs Finished Ring – Examples Of CAD And Finished Jewellery

CAD views of the 4 carat diamond halo eternity ring

To begin, it is often mentioned when crafting a bespoke piece of jewellery that the CAD image is ‘blocky.’

Additionally, our client can struggle to visualise how the finished ring will be refined. Due to this, we have put together a selection of bespoke designs featuring the initial CAD image and the finished ring design.

All of our CAD images are crafted free of charge once an order is placed for any bespoke item.

What is a CAD?

Most importantly, CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design. Put simply, a design is structured using a CAD software and considers the metal, measurements, and finally, stone colour and size of the finished piece.

On the contrary, the majority of the time clients find this stage interesting and exciting to see the perfect design come to life. Occasionally, clients are concerned about how chunky the piece is depicted.

Clients often will send us an image or a very basic sketch. Our small team then interoperates the design, creating a CAD image for our client to make any adjustments to. Eventually proceeding with the piece to be crafted.

Creating a bespoke engagement ring

Firstly, bespoke diamond rings are among the most popular bespoke designs we get asked for. For clients searching for a unique design that isn’t available anywhere else.

Beyond design, many details ensure a unique custom-made ring. For example, a custom engagement ring crafted with your own choice of diamond or gemstone. In addition, we craft many rings with rare gemstones.

As a result, many precious and semi-precious gemstones feature rare shades of colour. Our CAD design service transforms any concept into a solid ring design.

Bespoke gemstone designs

Creating CAD images with coloured stones in mind is also possible. The majority of the time, we initially find a gemstone of the requested colour/shade. The image is created based on the colour in mind; as shown below, the same works for different coloured metals. Although it is a cad drawing, the precious metal can appear darker compared to finished gold.

During a visit to our showroom on the Isle of Wight, the client specifically wanted to create a diamond halo ring with her favourite gemstone, Zircon.

Interestingly, this commission began with an initial sketch done by our client. Our bespoke team interpreted the sketch with the below CAD.

Specifically chosen by the client in our showroom is this Lavender Tanzanite Gemstone. The design process consisted of numerous CAD images until the ring was spot on. Most intricate detailing, such as milgrain edging, can be depicted in the design concepts.

We crafted this brand new ring design in luxurious 950 Platinum. Held within eight claws, the one-of-a-kind Blue Tanzanite contrasts with very small 1mm diamonds set between each prong; the diamonds added incredible sparkle. Furthermore, the unique effect varied from other halo-style settings.

Creating a bespoke wedding ring

Secondly, the most popular bespoke service requested – fitted wedding rings. Due to engagement rings becoming more modern and unusual, often they don’t sit with a straight wedding ring. Requiring a shaped to fit wedding ring, matching perfectly.

Generally, a shaped-to-fit wedding ring works by requiring the engagement ring throughout the process. Ensuring a perfect fit is achieved, the process begins with a CAD image of the wedding ring. The CAD image featuring a scan of the engagement ring is taken, and the wedding ring is shown alongside.
