A guide to lab-created pink diamonds and where to buy them
What makes a diamond pink?
Typically, coloured diamonds have trace elements which result in coloured hues within the diamond. However, pink diamonds differ. In fact, trace elements don't cause the distinctive colouration pink colouration. Instead, the colour results from a distortion in the lattice of a diamond crystal during its formation billions of years ago. Displaced carbon atoms affect the diamond's wavelength of light absorbed and reflected. As a result, we observe such diamonds as pink in varying degrees of intensity.
Many of the world's pink diamonds originate from the Argyle mine in Australia, responsible for some of the finest examples of intense pink diamonds. Many of the pink Argyle mine's diamonds have been sold in private auctions for incredible sums of money. Their value comes from the incredible rarity of natural fancy coloured compared to regular white diamonds.

Shades of pink.
We describe natural fancy coloured diamonds with specific descriptions to describe the depth and variation of colour. Shades of pink can vary significantly, including rose colours, purple colours, peachy pinks and combinations such as purplish pink. At the same time, the intensity of the colour can vary greatly. Look at the following colour chart used for Argyle diamonds to demonstrate the numerous variations in pink attributed to some diamonds.

How are lab-grown pink diamonds made?
Technological advances in the laboratory allow for a wide variety of diamond types. Most lab-grown pinks are created using a combination of Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) with irradiation to permanently change the structure of the diamond to achieve a pink colouration. The resulting colour change is permanent and provides a noticeable colour in the diamond ranging from pale pink to an intense purplish pink colour.
Ethically sourced pink diamonds
Interestingly, unlike natural diamonds pink in colour— formed through immense pressure, the CVD method involves a very low-pressure environment. At the same time, lower energy consumption without the need for mining the diamond assures buyers of an ethical origin with a low environmental impact. Finally, one of the most significant factors to popularise lab pink diamonds comes from their relative cost compared to natural fancy coloured diamonds.

How much do lab-grown pink diamonds cost?
Consider the cost of a natural fancy coloured diamond. Any natural diamond with noticeable pink colour will carry a significant price. For example, we see many specialists selling 0.50-carat natural pink for more than £100,000 for the stone. In contrast, a lab-grown pink diamond ring, set with an intense-pink 1-carat diamond in Platinum today will cost around £2500 - £3000.
Pink lab grown diamond engagement rings
Pink gemstones make a very good choice for engagement rings. But, buyers should give consideration to the precious metal chosen for their ring. For example, Platinum provides a neutral silver colour to contrast with the pink hue of the diamond. However, rose gold compliments pink and works exceptionally well for the setting and the engagement ring's band. Pink Diamond Bubble Rings
In addition to engagement rings, some of our iconic designs beautifully combine white and pink lab-grown diamonds. One of the best examples created in recent months took the form of the 2-carat Bowery bubble ring, bezel set with scattered sizes of diamonds. Such designs take inspiration from classic Raindance inspired ring styles, set with variations of colours mixed with white diaimonds.
