Zig-Zag Wedding Rings – Styles to Fit Awkard Settings

It can often be a dilemma, working out how to achieve a simple wedding ring that is shaped to fit your engagement ring. There are many approaches people take, but not all of these are ideal. Take the above engagement ring design for example. A design like this usually requires some experience to create a zig-zag wedding ring to work around the setting.

Popular Approaches

Visiting a local jewellery retailerMany jewellery stores / chains have their primary focus on selling jewellery. Awkward, or specialist work shaping rings is not always their priority. There is every chance that you will be sold a pre-existing shaped design with the hope that one style will be fairly close to the required fit.

Settling for a Straight Wedding Ring Sometimes this seems the easiest option. Straight bands are plentiful and readily available. You can even pick up a very light weight ring fairly cheaply, whether this be online, via mail order, or within a jewellery store. The likelihood is that the straight band will rock against your setting leaving noticeable gaps on either side. A shaped band would be more suitable because of this.

CAD design – Although this is a service we provide, it is not always the best solution. Some CAD designed shaped wedding rings can be heavy and very ‘blocky.’ They do not always relate to the original ring unless this has been previously modelled. Further refining of the ring design on the bench is often important where a design has been CAD designed. A better approach can be a hand-made wax model created alongside the engagement ring setting.

Best Approach

For the zig-zag shaped wedding ring design shown above (created as one approach to square shaped wedding bands) we would typically create a wax model. A hand carved wax model is created, with a consideration of the shape and weight of the engagement ring. The ring is then cast in the matched precious metal type. Once finished, the ring is then checked and adjusted wherever necessary to ensure a perfect fit.

How Long Does a Zig-Zag Shaped Wedding Ring Take?

This process typically takes around 3-4 weeks, during which time the engagement ring is submitted to us. An advantage to this work is the complimentary re-finishing that we provide for the engagement ring itself. This ensures both rings arrive back as new, ready for the wedding day.
