Adding diamonds can be an anniversary gift idea to celebrate a certain time of marriage. There are many reasons why this makes a great deal of sense, and the many emails we receive asking for this service mean that people really do want to bling their wedding rings!

Or, an unwanted wedding ring after divorce can become an entirely new ring for a brand new life.

How many diamonds to add?

The addition of gemstones to a plain band, spaced out at intervals, contrasts a shiny surface with the allure of sparkling stones.

Alternatively, channel-set diamonds laid edge-to-edge provide a textured effect and a continuous flow of stones. In particular, when Princess cuts appear on the design. In fact, Princess cuts leave no gaps between stones, unlike other shapes, including round brilliant-cuts.

The cost of the customisation will depend on the number and size of stones added to a ring. Moreover, some random styles mix sizes in a unique, elaborate arrangement. At the same time, diamond quality affects the price.

How much does it cost to add stones to a wedding ring?

Since you already own the wedding ring, the cost of precious metal is not a consideration. Your cost is for the gems and labour to carry out the work.

Ring depth limits the stone size, with lighter bands only suitable for tiny diamonds. For this reason, larger gems require a deeper band and greater setting depth.

As part of any ring commission, we match both colour and clarity within any given set of stones. In addition, we match gemstone colours and clarities to accompanying jewellery worn by our clients.

Depending on the chosen setting, we can progressively add stones around a wedding ring. This works best for flush set stones spaced around the ring or stones added to grain settings. Some clients choose a yearly anniversary to add diamonds to their rings progressively.

What diamond shapes can be put into a band?

The most popular diamond shapes for adding diamonds to a ring are round brilliant cuts and square princess cuts. These are both cut in very small sizes suitable for setting into slim wedding rings.

Clients often choose the stone shape that best matches their engagement ring.

For other styles of stone, such as the emerald cut, we often use Baguette cuts that flow beautifully along a machine-cut channel.

Matching new gems to existing gems in your ring

If the engagement ring features diamond shoulders, adding diamonds to a plain wedding ring to match the wedding ring will create a well-considered pair of rings.

We recommend aligning the ends of the channel and matching the size of the gem for a balanced look.

Most engagement rings require a new setting to hold a bigger stone. The depth of a wedding ring limits the size of the stone. In some instances, adding a raised bezel opens up more possibilities to increase the size of a diamond or gemstone added to a ring.

The importance of depth for diamond and gemstone setting

If you’re buying a plain wedding ring but want the option of having the same ring set with diamonds in the future, we strongly recommend purchasing at least a medium-weight wedding ring to allow enough depth for diamonds in the future.

At Serendipity Diamonds, we will only diamond set plain bands that have been purchased from Serendipity, so please remember this. We support the original ring which cannot be done with third-party wedding rings, but if you’re a returning client this will never be an issue.
