Sapphire Ouroboros Gold Snake Ring

Created through our bespoke jewellery design service, this extraordinary Ouroboros snake ring was handcrafted using our client's own unwanted gold jewellery, melted down and transformed into an entirely new piece with personal meaning. The sculpted serpent wraps continuously around the finger, meeting its own tail in the ancient Ouroboros design, while two 1.2mm yellow sapphires form the snake's eyes. Detailed scales, individually sculpted features and a beautifully defined serpent's head complete this highly individual commission. A wonderful example of how sentimental or unworn gold can be recycled and reimagined into a completely unique piece of fine jewellery.

Ouroboros Gold Snake Ring with Yellow Sapphires

Rather than allowing old rings to remain unworn, our client chose to transform her existing gold into something completely different.

The original jewellery was melted down and recycled, retaining the precious metal while giving it an entirely new purpose. From this gold, we created a bespoke serpent design that wraps around the finger, with detailed scales continuing along the body towards the head and tail.

Small 1.2mm yellow sapphires were selected for the eyes. Their warm golden colour works beautifully against the yellow gold while adding a subtle point of colour and character to the serpent's face.

The finished piece bears little resemblance to the jewellery from which it began, yet importantly, the client's original gold continues its story within the new ring.

The Ouroboros – An Ancient Symbol of Eternity and Renewal

The Ouroboros is one of the world's oldest and most intriguing symbolic motifs. Traditionally depicted as a serpent or dragon forming a circle by consuming its own tail, examples can be traced back to ancient Egyptian iconography, with the motif later appearing in Greek philosophical and alchemical traditions.

Its name derives from the Greek ourá (tail) and borós (devouring), essentially meaning "tail-devouring".

Throughout its long history, the Ouroboros has been associated with ideas of eternity, renewal, continuity and the cyclical nature of life. The serpent consumes itself while simultaneously completing itself—a continuous circle without a clearly defined beginning or end.

That symbolism feels particularly appropriate for a remodelled jewellery commission. Gold from jewellery that had reached the end of one chapter was melted, recycled and returned in a completely new form. Nothing precious was lost; instead, the material became part of a new story.

Bespoke Snake and Serpent Rings

Snake rings have appeared repeatedly throughout jewellery history, but became especially fashionable in Britain during the Victorian period. Their flowing form lends itself naturally to wrapping around the finger, while symbolism surrounding snakes—including transformation, protection, eternity and renewal—has given serpent jewellery an enduring appeal.

Our bespoke service allows these ideas to be interpreted individually rather than reproduced as a standard design. Details such as the shape of the head, scale pattern, gemstone eyes, width, proportions and precious metal can all be adapted to create a ring personal to its wearer.

For this commission, the traditional Ouroboros motif provided the starting point, before the design was developed into the distinctive yellow-gold serpent pictured here.
