Alexandrite Unity Engagement Ring
We created this incredible Alexandrite engagement ring working with our existing Unity ring design. Crafted in 950 Platinum, the Unity design provides a simple, minimalist setting to display the rich purple Alexandrite. Our client chose a round brilliant cut Alexandrite, 1.28 carats in weight and measured 6.5mm. The rich purple colouration of the gemstone stands out from the mirror-polished Platinum to provide a unique alternative to this very simple ring design.
What is Alexandrite?
Alexandrite has been described as an “Emerald by day and a Ruby at night”. Alexandrite is the very rare colour-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s, present-day sources originate from Sri Lanka, East Africa and Brazil. High-quality natural Alexandrite is very rare and expensive.
While working on this beautiful ring commission, we experienced the attraction of Alexandrite. To explain: this unique gemstone appears purple in some light conditions. But, move the gemstone into a different light, and other colours appear—for example, blues and browns. The ring appears to have an intense purple colouration in our video above, but this changes dramatically. As a result, Alexandrite offers wearers a truly unique gemstone.
